TODAY – Tuesday 9th June 2015 sees the first ever CD release, 5-track EP (limited edition of 50) from The Girl Next Door – along with a brand new video and audio previews online (below). The Girl Next Door is a solo project of Missy Tassles, dilettante extraordinaire, whose main projects include Black Light Ray and Black Light Art Collective alongside keeping her own cartoon diary blog.
The Girl Next Door (and Missy Tassles) are proud to be included in this year’s Hannah Directory – released this week as part of Hannah Festival week. The contributors to Hannah Directory are chosen for their enterprising spirit, making great things happen from the bottom up, often starting with no resources except their passion, commitment and imagination. The Girl Next Door/Missy Tassles is included among the best examples of that in the country.
“I’m delighted that The Girl Next Door is involved in Hannah Directory this year,” says Andrew Wilson, who co-ordinates the Directory.
Missy first began writing and playing songs around 2010; The Girl Next Door project came about by chance, when asked by a neighbour to play a solo gig, which she took on as a challenge. Asked to to play more shows here and there by those who saw her, she was lucky enough to have someone (John White of UV Pop) offer to record some of her songs and the result is on this CD.
Here is a video for one the songs from the CD, Untamed Highway
Of this special limited release, Missy says: ” My aim was to try something a little bit PJ Harvey, a little bit Mazzy Star, a little bit White Stripes, with a big dash of catharsis. All the songs mean something to me and I am proud of the fact that I managed to do something like this on my own for the first time. It was an important step in my musical career at a significant time in my personal life; I limited the CD run to just 50 because I wanted a symbolic but modest way of underlining the project. These recordings are pretty rough and ready but we wanted to capture something of the raw feeling in the songs. My heartfelt thanks go to all those who have helped and supported and encouraged me along the way, and those who continue to do so.”
